HD vs Megapixel – What’s the difference
When a customer inquires about a high definition or megapixel surveillance camera you must be able to define the difference and provide the best possible solutions for each application. What is HD? What are megapixels?
Let’s start with the basics. SD (standard definition) consists of 704 pixels with 480 lines of resolution and is the standard resolution that TVs have used until the introduction of HD or high definition. High definition displays consist of at least one million pixels. Note that I said at least one million pixels, meaning that a high definition image could contain more than a million pixels. HD images use an aspect ratio of 16:9.
Next we’ll discuss megapixels. A megapixel surveillance camera is capable of producing an image with at least one million pixels or more. Most consumers would assume that HD and megapixel cameras are the same since they both use an identical number of pixels to produce an image. However, one main variable that sets the two apart would be the size of the image. While HD images use the 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, megapixel security cameras produce images in a 4:3 aspect ratio. One similarity with both types of cameras is that they use the same video compression, which is H.264.

Benefits of Owning A Video surveillance System
Over the past 20 years, literally thousands of customers have told us: I cant understand how Ive lived without a video surveillance system for so long.
In addition to deterring criminal acts, a well-designed system offers countless benefits that will protect your assets, result in a safer environment, and help you more effectively manage your business or residential space.
One of the primary benefits of a video security system is to deter a criminal act from ever happening. Well placed cameras will give would-be criminals reason for pause, or send them looking for locations less prepared.
According to recent retail industry studies, the average small business loses $50k per year¦ And given the current economic conditions and ease at which criminals can move stolen products, risk of both internal and external theft has skyrocketed. Its proven that a simple video security system can easily cut that figure in half.
Workforce productivity is reported to be the biggest cost businesses face today. Surveillance cameras help keep employees on their best behavior when you’re not present, and enable a manager to monitor work habits on his own schedule. It allows flexibility to monitor the premises at your convenience
Many unscrupulous criminals look to benefit by making false claims against companies. Lacking evidence to defend themselves, businesses literally get robbed blind with zero recourse. Video security is an effective deterrent of this criminal activity, and can contest these claims should they occur.
Your unscrupulous competitor would pay dearly to know your company secrets. Strategically placed devices can help prevent those with access and intent to stealing your intellectual property think twice.
Many retail businesses use their video security systems to study customer shopping habits, optimize store traffic patterns, improve product placement, and ensure a positive customer experience. More effective employees + increased sales + satisfied customers = effective management.
Video is commonly used in manufacturing or fulfillment environments to monitor equipment and quickly identify problems that may cause delays or bottlenecks. Video is also used to provide valuable insight into process effectiveness, and to make sure a business or operation is appropriately staffed.
Ultimately, business managers and homeowners are simply looking for peace of mind protecting their assets and providing a safe and secure environment for employees, friends, and family. And in the event of incident, knowing they are empowered to bring the offender to justice,¦ something only a video surveillance system can deliver.
Many video security systems feature software capable of viewing multiple facilities from a single location. This can dramatically reduce your equipment expense and management overhead costs, and allow managers to oversee company wide operations despite geographic and time challenges.
False claims often stem from employees reporting incidents outside your surveillance systems field of view. We recommend that businesses augment their traditional video with covert cameras, so no one knows where safe havens for both crime and false claims exist and where they do not.
